MEDIA: Johnny Nelson [Deceased]
  • Long-time journalist and special friend of Section V athletics.
  • Sports Editor for the Hornell Tribune for many years, he also wrote for the Bradford Era and the Alfred Reporter, as well as serving as Sports Director for WHHO, Hornell.
  • He loved Section V and was a very familiar face at events year-round.
  • Given awards of distinction from the New York Coaches Association and Section V Athletics.

    ADMINISTRATOR: Ted Woods

  • A public school educator who has given over 30 years of service to Section V as secretary, treasurer and Executive Director. Currently is a member of the Boys' Basketball Committee.
  • His labors have been the result of his inner drive to provide a positive and valuable experience for Section V Student Athletes.
  • Recipient of the McDonald's Community Service Award (1999), the Section V Mark Vienna Memorial Service Award (1998), and is a member of the New York State Soccer Hall of Fame and the SUNY Cortland Athletic Hall of Fame.

    OFFICIAL: Nick Urzetta

  • The "Dean" of basketball officials, having served 35 years in the active role (1940-1975), and 26 years in the support of IAABO Board 60 of Basketball Officials.
  • A life member of IAABO, he also was an active official for football and baseball.
  • Has received many awards of recognition, including the Monroe County Hall of Fame (1975), The Frontier Field Walk of Fame (1997), The Section V Football Hall of Fame (1998), the Chase Collegiate Basketball Tournament Hall of Fame, The East Rochester High School Athletic Hall of Fame (1989), and is the recipient of the Section V 50 year Service Award.
  • The Chase Collegiate Basketball Tournament's Sportsmanship Award and IAABO Board 60's Service Award both proudly bear his name.

    COACH: Anthony "Tony" Alvaro

  • In his 42-year coaching career at Romulus Central and Geneva DeSales, his teams won 467 games, ranking him in the top 20 All-Time coaching records in New York State.
  • His teams won seven Section V titles at Romulus and one at Geneva DeSales, during which time he was the recipient of six Coach of the Year Awards.
  • 1978 New York State Coach of the Year.
  • Retired, but currently the assistant Varsity coach of the Clyde-Savannah girls' basketball team.

    Ed Nietopski

  • Entering his 45th year of coaching, he served as Varsity coach at Brockport, Cardinal Mooney and Bishop Kearney High Schools, where he has collected 495 wins, including Section V Basketball championships at Cardinal Mooney (1982) and Bishop Kearney (1994,1995, 1999 and 2000).
  • He was named All Greater Rochester Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1994, and was given the New York State Coaches Association Award in 1966.
  • Has been named "Man of the Year" three times, by The Greece Police Department (1985), St. Bonafice (1991) and General Pulaski (1993). He also is a member of the Frontier Walk of Fame (1995), and SUNY Brockport's Hall of Heritage (2000).
  • In 2000, the Bishop Kearney gymnasium was refurbished and dedicated as the Ed Nietopski Gymnasium.

    Salvatore Rizzo (Deceased)

  • Legendary coach at Rochester's East High School, where his Orientals won nine Section V titles in 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1979, 1985, 1989 and 1990.
  • He was named the Section V Coach of the Year three times (1972, 1978 and 1983), and amassed 412 career wins during his 26 year career, the 5th best all-time coaching record in Section V history at the time of his induction.
  • He was best known for his dedication to his players, and was recognized several times throughout his career for the positive impact he had on young people's lives as a teacher and coach.

    Ralph Angelo

  • A 1991 graduate of Honeoye Central, he scored 2,407 career points, an average of 26.5 points per game for his four-year career. At one time was the leading all-time scorer in Section V history, and at the time of his induction is ranked #2 all-time scorer in Section V history.
  • Named to the All Greater Rochester Teams in 1990 and 1991, and led the Bulldogs to consecutive titles Section V titles in 1991 and 1992.
  • Was the leading scorer in Section V in his sophomore and senior seasons, averaging 28.9 and 31.9 points per game, respectively
  • Three-time recipient of All-State honors, he is currently a successful financial planner in the Rochester area.

    Joe Arlauckas

  • Member of the 1983 class of Rochester's Jefferson High School, where he was a 1983 selection to the All Greater Rochester Team in both basketball and basketball.
  • Scored a personal career-high single game total of 44 points during his senior year, when he attracted the attention of many Division I coaches.
  • Chose NCAA Division I Niagara University, where he was named to his all-conference team and led Niagara in scoring for three consecutive years.
  • Scored 1,620 points during his Niagara U. career, and at the time of his induction remained 4th on the all-time scoring list, second on the all-time rebounding list and 1st on the all-time blocked shots list at Niagara.
  • Drafted by the NBA Sacramento Kings in 1987, but finished the season playing in the Italian Professional League. Then played for 10 years in Spain, 5 of which were with the Real Madrid team. During his European career, he was an All Star selection seven times, and played on one Italian League Championship team, 1 Spanish League Championship Team and two European Championships while with Real Madrid. Once scored a career high and EuroLeague record 63 points in a single game.

    >Joe Binion

  • Rochester Madison High graduate of the class of 1980. In his senior year, he led Madison in scoring with a 25 points per game average, and in rebounding, averaging 21 rebounds per game, leading his team to the Section V AAA Finals.
  • Recorder arguably the greatest all-time single performance in Section V history, when he scored 41 points and gathered 42 rebounds in the Sectional semi-final game. Madison went on to win their last Section V title, taking the 1980 AAA Championship. He was named the MVP.
  • Also named to the 1980 All Greater Rochester Team.
  • Played college ball at North Carolina A&T, then professionally in the Italian Professional League.
